IRCC to Issue Invitations Under Parents and Grandparents

Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is reopening this summer with IRCC sending as many as 17,860 invitations to apply (ITAs) beginning July 28, 2025. 

This intake is aimed at individuals who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in 2020 and are still in the IRCC pool. The department plans to approve 10,000 complete sponsorship applications under this intake window.

What this means for you?

If you submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in 2020, check your email frequently starting July 28, 2025. 

Not receiving an invitation this year doesn’t eliminate future chances, but you may have to wait for another intake or opt for a Super Visa in the meantime.

In case IRCC sends you an ITA, you must act quickly as processing is time-sensitive and documentation must be complete and accurate.

What is the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?

The PGP is a Canadian immigration program that allows citizens and permanent residents of Canada to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency.

After getting successfully sponsored, parents and grandparents can live in Canada permanently and enjoy benefits such as:

• Access to Canadian healthcare

• The ability to apply for Canadian citizenship later

Reunification with family in a stable, long-term setting.

Who can Sponsor?

To sponsor your parents or grandparents through the PGP, you must:

• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act

• Be 18 years of age or older

• Live in Canada

• Prove that you have enough financial income to support your sponsored family members

• Sign an undertaking agreement promising to:

• Financially support the sponsored person for 20 years (10 years in Quebec)

• Repay any social assistance received by the sponsored person during that period

• Sponsors must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) based on family size for the last 3 consecutive years
